"I think it’s a brilliant environment: you can bring your whole self to work, and you don’t have to conform to a specific way of working or a way of being that’s not true to you. And that’s so important. Because of the nature of the business, every department is different when it comes to flexible working options, but within my team, we’ve been able to trial some really innovative policies to meet everyone’s needs – and it’s been great to have that freedom.

There’s a good camaraderie here too; a team-working spirit. That comes through in things like winning bids. If we’re competing for something alongside private companies, and we win, we’ll always have a celebration of what we’ve achieved together. The work might be a building project or something digital, but whatever it is, if it’s gone out to tender and we win, it’s a very positive experience to be part of as a team.
In terms of managing a team, our organisation really helps you stay ready to lead. I’ve done leadership training, as well as all kinds of training for management, mentoring, and career development.

I try and keep that portfolio of training up to date, so that I can share it with my team, to help them develop and to encourage them to move in whatever direction’s right for them. Every day you learn new things about leading teams and working with colleagues to ensure their needs are met."
